BILAT USA 2.0 Workshop: Atlantic Ocean research - Detecting new ways of information exchange for enhanced collaboration

Event's Date:
Monday, October 6, 2014 - 09:00 to 17:00

BILAT USA 2.0 is organizing an international full-day workshop on 6 October 2014 in Rome, the day before the EurOCEAN 2014 Conference. Upon request from the European Commission, the workshop will not only involve EU and US participation, but will also include Canadian, Brazilian and South African perspectives.

Many different platforms and communication networks exist on Atlantic Ocean research. However, a clear overview on how information is collected, stored and exchanged is missing. Information sharing about funding opportunities for international Atlantic Ocean research collaboration does not happen systematically. In order to get comprehensive insights on current practices of collaboration and possible tools for information exchange, different stakeholders from several countries will be invited to participate in the workshop. Presenters and participants invited to the workshop include from European level the European Commission, the Strategic Forum for S&T Cooperation (SFIC), the JPI Oceans, the BILAT projects with the USA, Canada (ERA-CAN Plus), Brazil (B-BICE+) and South Africa (ESASTAP Plus) and other EU-funded projects. From national level research funding organisations and ministries, research management organisations and research performing organisation will participate. The workshop will also include international level policy dialogue initiatives in Atlantic Ocean research.

The programme will respect a mix of speeches, presentations, analysis of survey results, interactive parts with the audience and moderated panel discussions. Together with all participants, it is intended

  • to share information about ongoing initiatives both on EU and MS/AC level on international cooperation in Atlantic ocean research,
  • to find creative new ways of a continuous enhanced information exchange about initiatives and projects with relevance for Atlantic Ocean research, and
  • to boost international collaboration in Atlantic Ocean research by providing an overview on current initiatives and practices in international programme level collaboration.

The BILAT USA 2.0 expects the workshop to develop suggestions for a methodology and a process which assures a constant information flow on Atlantic research initiatives and projects to boost international cooperation. It will produce a common knowledge base about what kind of information is currently shared and with which tools to collect, store and exchange this information. An agreement between the participants on what information should be shared and how to sustainably exchange this information in the future is vital to increase international research collaboration.
