REPAIR

The Project RepAIR will perform research on future repair and maintenance for the Aerospace industry. Therefore the onsite maintenance and repair of aircraft by in-tegrated direct digital manufacturing is in the focus of this project. The main objective of RepAIR is to shift the “make” or “buy” decision towards the “make” decision by cost reduction in the remake and rework of spare parts and therefore improve cost efficiency for maintenance repair in aeronautics and air transport.

SOLUTIONS

Transport is a key enabler of economic activity and social connectedness. While providing essential services to society and economy, transport is also an important part of the economy and it is at the core of a number of major sustainability challenges, in particular climate change, air quality, safety, energy security and efficiency in the use of resources (EC 2011: Transport White Paper).

UMRIDA

Virtual prototyping (VP) is a key technology for environmental friendly and cost effective design in the aircraft industry. However, the underlying analysis and simulation tools (for loads, stresses, emissions, noise), are currently applied with a unique set of input data and model variables, although realistic operating conditions are a superposition of numerous uncertainties under which the industrial products operate (uncertainties on operational conditions, on geometries resulting from manufacturing tolerances, numerical error sources and uncertain physical model parameters).

HAIC

Commercial aircraft have been experiencing in-service events while flying in the vicinity of deep vective clouds since at least the early 1990s. Heated probes and engines are the areas of air-craft most prone to mixed phase and glaciated icing threat.

OSTLER

Present-day electric vehicles are typically designed by starting from an existing vehicle platform and designing a storage device (battery pack) to fit the constraints of the existing vehicle. OSTLER is based on the concept of modular storage devices around which an electric vehicle (EV) can be designed. The vehicle designer can select storage capacity to give range in EV mode (e.g. 20 km, 50 km, 100 km) in much the same way as current-generation vehicles are designed around different powertrain packages (e.g. 1.6 litre, 1.8 litre, 2.0 litre).

ADVISE

ADVISE is a prenormative project for experimental validation of simulations of dynamic events using full-field optical methods of deformation measurement. These powerful tools are used in evaluating the performance, reliability, and safety of primary structures and for validating their computational design. Optimised design of primary structures leads to lighter and more energy efficient products that cost less, are more reliable and safer.

BEAUTY

The dedicated internal combustion engines considered in the proposal can be fuelled with pure bioethanol or its blends with hydrocarbon-based fuel; their application is intended for light commercials and heavy duty busses and trucks (e.g.: garbage trucks) on captive fleets, then allowing a much higher amplitude of adaptation of bioethanol blends to the need of the combustion process.

FIREPROOF

The traditional fire safety regulations that apply to ship design have been widely described as inadequate in two ways. Firstly they do impose unnecessary and inapplicable constraints on novel designs. Secondly novel designs can have features that do not satisfy the premise of existing rules, thereby setting them free from fire safety rules by default, often leading to unsafe designs.
