FUELSYSTEM3000

The medium/heavy duty Diesel engine industry is facing new challenges for meeting the forthcoming emission regulations. Injection pressure above 2500bar and possibly reaching 3000bar and multiple injection strategy can drastically reduce the NOx/PM trade-off and allow use of cheap after treatment systems for meeting the set legislations. However, such injection strategies inevitably result to formation of cavitation which may have an adverse effect of the durability of the fuel injection system against surface erosion.

MLPM2012

Over the last decade, enormous progress has been made on recording the health state of an individual patient down to the molecular level of gene activity and genomic information even sequencing a patient s genome for less than 1000 dollars is no longer an unrealistic goal. However, the ultimate hope to use all this information for personalized medicine, that is to tailor medical treatment to the needs of an individual, remains largely unfulfilled.

GOCARB

Patients with diabetes must be taught how to achieve glycaemic control by monitoring their glucose levels properly. They are medicated with either exogenous insulin or other drugs and encouraged to improve their diet and physical activity. Although studies have shown that planning meals and counting carbohydrates is of great importance for diabetic patients, even well trained diabetic patients find it difficult to estimate carbohydrates precisely.

ATWC

The project aims at using adaptive optimization to reduce energy consumption in a multimode wireless communication terminal. This is becoming increasingly important to reduce carbon emission and pollution associated with battery disposal especially considering the projected growth of wireless networks. The idea is to use hardware re-configurability not only for multi mode/multi standard operation, but also to adapt the performance of the terminal to the requirement of the user in the changing environment.

HYDROFRAC

The project aims to enhance the hydraulic fracturing techniques for increasing productivity of oil and gas reservoirs. The objective will be reached by developing numerical simulation of coupled geo-mechanical, hydrodynamic and micro-seismic processes for proper choices of equipment, regimes and parameters of hydraulic fracturing. Simulation of micro-seismicity will also provide a unique means to improve the interpretation of micro-seismic data.

TFE

Most task furniture in schools today is inadequate to meet the postural needs of students. With 88 million in full-time education in Europe alone and in the context of the proliferation of IT in the classroom and advances in teaching methods, posture, health and well-being of students is imperative. Growing awareness has led to growing demand for improved furniture design. Recent studies show that children typically spend 15,000 hours sitting during their education in furniture not fit for purpose. Approximately 13 per cent of children aged 10-16 suffer recurrent back pain.

DECCOMM

In this fellowship I intend to investigate the performance of a wireless network, with the emphasis on the connection points between the wireless ports and the wire line networks. Provided that wireless signals travel through the air, and thus are received by multiple receptions, where each may be connected to the wire line network or even further to other wireless network, significant benefits in the overall spectral efficiency are foreseen. Information theoretic analysis, along with diverse methods from other disciplines are to be the main tools in this fellowship.
