Vitamin D deficiency has significant implications for human health and impacts on healthy growth and development and successful aging. Fundamental knowledge gaps are barriers to implementing a safe and effective public health strategy to prevent vitamin D deficiency and optimize status. ODIN will provide the evidence to prevent vitamin D deficiency in Europe and improve nutrition and public health through food.

Hydro-Meteorology Research (HMR) is an area of critical scientific importance and of high societal relevance. It plays a key role in guiding predictions relevant to the safety and prosperity of humans and ecosystems from highly urbanized areas, to coastal zones, and to agricultural landscapes. Of special interest and urgency within HMR is the problem of understanding and predicting the impacts of severe hydro-meteorological events, such as flash-floods and landslides in complex orography areas, on humans and the environment, under the incoming climate change effects.

DISCOVER THE COSMOS

The Discover the COSMOS coordination action aims to demonstrate innovative ways to involve teachers and students in eScience through the use of existing e-infrastructures in order to spark young people's interest in science and in following scientific careers.

DRIHM

Predicting weather and climate and its impacts on the environment, including hazards such as floods and landslides, is still one of the main challenges of the 21st century, with significant societal and economic implications.

ESPAS

The ESPAS project will provide the e-Infrastructure necessary to support the access to observations, the modelling and prediction of the Near-Earth Space environment. This includes the plasma and energetic particle environments that surround our planet as well as the neutral atmosphere at altitudes above 60 km. These environments are an important target for future research in areas such as space weather and Sun-climate studies. The ESPAS interface will provide access to a diverse set of databases that have been developed for the needs of different users.

Unprecedented growth in the accessibility of imaging data of persons with brain diseases has led to the development of computational infrastructures offering scientists access to image databases and e-Science services. FP7 neuGRID is the leading e-Infrastructure where neuroscientists can find core services and resources for brain image analysis.

CASSIS

Solar System Science has traditionally been undertaken within a number of separate disciplines. However, like any system its aspects are inter-related and it has been difficult to address these aspects because of the lack of the integrating technology required to span the inter-disciplinary boundaries. While advances in technology means that the intrinsic differences between disciplines (manifest in differing data formats and dependencies) are beginning to be addressed, it is necessary to coordinate our efforts in order to help break down the barriers.

Partners to this proposal include the six major global programmes exploring the full extent of species diversity, a core dimension in human knowledge of global biodiversity.

IGE

In order to continuously support the European computing infrastructures and to exploit possible synergies, it is of crucial importance to coordinate the European Globus activities, drive forward the developments according to the requirements of the European users and to strengthen the influence of the European developers in the Globus Alliance. Topics like security or privacy, data privacy protection, compatibility with Grid standards used in Europe to enable interoperability, and aspects of multi-nationality are important in Europe and deserve a stronger representation in Globus.
