EUROSURGE

Computer and Robot Assisted Surgery (CRAS) is an area receiving broad attention worldwide, because of its strong potential to achieve new levels of healthcare. In Europe, the robotics and the cognitive science communities have been independently pursuing research in this field, making significant, but fragmented contributions. Furthermore, strong manufacturers of surgical instruments are present in Europe.

LT-WEB

The goal of LT-Web is to set the foundation for the integration of language technologies into core Web technologies, via the creation of a standard defining three kinds of metadata about: 1) information in Web content being relevant for language technology processing; 2) processes for creating Web content via localisation and content management work flows; 3) language technology applications and resources used in these applications.

X-LIKE

The goal of the X-LIKE project is to develop technology to monitor and aggregate knowledge that is currently spread across global mainstream and social media, and to enable cross-lingual services for publishers, media monitoring and business intelligence. In terms of research contributions, the aim is to combine scientific insights from several scientific areas to contribute in the area of cross-lingual text understanding.

POETICON++

Handling novel situations beyond learned schemas or set behaviours is still a quest in engineering cognitive and embodied systems. Powerful generalisation mechanisms are necessary for any agent to operate effectively in real-world environments. POETICON++ suggests that natural language can be used as a learning tool for generalisation of learned behaviours & perceptual experiences and generation of new behaviours & experiences (creativity).

SMARTAGRIFOOD

The SmartAgriFood project addresses the food and agribusiness as a use case for the Future Internet. The intelligence, efficiency, sustainability and performance of the agri-food sector can be radically enhanced by using information & decision support systems that are tightly integrated with advanced internet-based networks & services. Concurrently, the sector provides extremely demanding use cases for Future Internet design from physical layer all the way up to the service layer.

DIAMANT

The ability to engineer materials at the level of single atoms is rapidly becoming an urgent practical requirement as new technologies demand ever smaller devices. However, such a capability also offers profoundly new functionality for molecular-scale devices. The DIAMANT team has pioneered the discovery and development of diamond as a uniquely promising material system for solid-state molecular technologies: Diamond has exceptional optical and magnetic properties that are associated with dopant complexes or solid-state molecules in the diamond lattice.

SUMO

Scientists develop computer models of real, complex systems to increase understanding of their behaviour and make predictions. A prime example is the Earth's climate. Complex climate models are used to compute the climate change in response to expected changes in the composition of the atmosphere due to man-made emissions. Years of research have improved the ability to simulate the climate of the recent past but these models are still far from perfect.

CONECT

CONECT proposes a holistic network design approach that drastically enhances performance in wireless networks by unlocking the hidden potential of the broadcast wireless medium. Information and communication theory, and protocol design engineering are used as the foundations for developing provably optimal cooperative information forwarding strategies, from multi-signal fusion to packet relay and node reciprocation. As a result, close to optimal end-to-end throughput is achieved while energy consumption is significantly reduced and other performance metrics like delay can be controlled.

MSV

In recent years, various terms the Virtual Physiological Human (VPH), Integrative Biology, Physiome Research have been used to describe the trend in biomedical research towards the consideration of systemic processes. These phenomena are commonly observed in living organisms but cannot be explained within a single sub-system but reflect, rather, systemic outcomes that result from the interaction of multiple sub-systems.

COAST

Towards the Future Internet age, COAST aims to build a Future Content-Centric Network (FCN) architecture, able to offer network-wide Service Level Agreements (SLAs) in service discovery and content consumption. In COAST FCN, the users will specify solely which content or web service they need and the COAST framework will find and deliver the desired or the most relevant data in an efficient, timely, user-/network-friendly way. To achieve this goal, COAST will focus on three key innovation pillars: On the fly identification and distributed on-line discovery.
