Your role in the project:
As the librarian of the Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions I have co-written Deliverable 3.1, the U.S. funder report for Innovation in Society focusing on the National Science Foundation, wrote deliverable 3.2, the U.S. Country Report, and helped developed the U.S. section of the Funder Requirements Matrix. I also organized the short story competition for high school students, contributed to the glossary, and co-wrote a paper published in the Science and Engineering Ethics Journal entitled "Broader Impacts" or "Responsible Research and Innovation"? A Comparison of Two Criteria for Funding Research."
Assessment of your participation:
I have been highly impressed by the EU project, both in its attention to detail and how smoothly it has run. I think much of the success of the project is due to our excellent PI, Doris Schroeder, and the excellent level of collaboration and commitment of the other members of the team. The comparisons between different country strategies for funding RRI has been extremely illuminating and helped spark a good bit of discussion and debate among the scientists and engineers I work with in the United States. I hope that the best practices and findings that come out of this project serve as a useful tool for researchers, politicians, and the public as we move forward looking at how to shape research in a way that helps solve major societal problems.
Any suggestions or comments:
Working as part of the PRoGreSS team has been a wonderful experience for me professionally, putting me in contact with scholars from all over the world. I look forward to participating in another project and will be on the lookout for opportunities to contribute.
