GENDER-NET

Despite more and more solid indicators, extensive research, policy initiatives at European and national levels, and wide awareness-raising on the issues linked to gender and science, the European Research Area is still confronted to structural obstacles within its research institutions which prevent the ERA from reaching its objectives on the full participation of women in research and innovation at all levels (while women comprise >50% of PhD graduates, they still occupy less than 20% of Grade A positions) as well as to a lack of integration of the gender dimension in research contents

PROGRESS

Delivering European Renewal relies heavily on the advancement of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) that is, research and innovation which is: - is ethically acceptable, - is sustainable by avoiding significant adverse effects and - drives towards the common good, i.e. societal desirability. To achieve maximum impact where it is most needed, ProGReSS concentrates on the underexplored and least converging part of RRI, namely achieving societal desirability.

SYN-ENERGENE

Synthetic biology (SynBio) offers huge potential for applications in energy, health and the environment. It also brings with it various challenges such as regulatory issues of biosafety, biosecurity and intellectual property rights, as well as potential environmental and socio-eomic risks in developing countries. As yet, however, there is scant public knowledge about the technology.

ENGINEER

ENGINEER will support the widespread adoption in Europe of innovative methods of science teaching and provide extensive teacher training on inquiry-based methods. It will be based on the proven Engineering is Elementary (EiE) program developed by Boston's Museum of Science (BMOS) since 2003-04 and now widely used in primary schools throughout the U.S. Evaluations of EiE have found that incorporating engineering in science teaching, using inquiry-based pedagogic methods, results in highly desirable impacts on students and teachers, raising students interest in science and engineering.

PATHWAY

Following the recommendations of the Science Education Now: A renewed Pedagogy for the Future of Europe report, the Pathway Supporting Action is bringing together experts in the field of science education research and teachers/ communities, scientists and researchers involved in pioneering scientific research, policy makers and curriculum developers to promote the effective widespread use of inquiry and problem based science teaching techniques in primary and secondary schools in Europe and beyond.

EUZOOS-XXI

The main objective of this proposal is to engage public in the delineation of large-scale activities at European Zoos and Marine Parks, focused on nature conservation and biodiversity.

Worldwide Zoos and Marine Parks have changed immensely over the last 50 years. Modern Zoos and Marine Parks in Europe have specific areas of intervention: Education, Entertainment, Conservation, and Research.

NECOBELAC

The idea is to spread know-how in the production, dissemination and retrieval and use of health information in Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries, on the basis of the European and LAC experiences, the analysis of the different socio-cultural landscapes and the specific health information needs of the areas involved.

PATS

While it can be assumed that the security industry and organisations will increase their efforts to keep and to strengthen trust relations with citizens, the question however remains: how can one raise more awareness of social conflicts and privacy concerns among those public and private agencies that undermine privacy necessarily on a daily basis in their mission to provide security?

RISE

RISE is a CSA (coordinating), which aims to promote pan-European and International Awareness on Ethical Aspects of Biometrics and Security Technologies.

In particular the project aims to deepen, enlarge, and ensure continuity to transnational (European) and international dialogue already instigated by the international conferences on ethics and biometrics organised by the EC DG Research and the US DHS Privacy Office respectively in Brussels and Washington DC in 2005 and 2006.

HIDE

HIDE (HOMELAND SECURITY, BIOMETRIC IDENTIFICATION & PERSONAL DETECTION ETHICS) is a 36 month coordination action that aims to create a PANEUROPEAN DIALOGUE PLATFORM ON ETHICS AND GOVERNANCE OF PERSONAL DETECTION TECHNOLOGIES AND BIOMETRICS. THREE KEY IDEAS LED THE CONSORTIUM TO PREPARE THE HIDE PROJECT: Ongoing societal concerns about the use of biometrics and personal detection technologies for improving European security are legitimate. Research focusing on ethical, privacy and normative challenges posed by these technologies in the context of EU 27 is needed.
